Selling Out Has Its Upside

Lots of complaints from the indie nerds about bands selling their songs to commercials for cars or episodes of Grey's Anatomy. But, for my part, I don't really get what all the hullabaloo is about. I understand the concept of artistic integrity, but musicians, just like everyone else, need to make a buck. They need money for food, clothes, studio time, tours, and drugs. And with so much of the music industry in such flux right now (terrestrial radio is shit, concert attendance down, record sales nearly non-existent, record labels that have no idea what their job is), who can blame them for looking elsewhere for some cash flow. Plus, it's a decent way for legit musicians to get their songs heard. This is how I heard this little Nick Drake-ish gem of a song by Berlin, Germany's Oren Lavie. Way to go, Chevy Malibu.
Her Morning Elegance - Oren Lavie

And, once in a blue moon, the commercial and song can compliment each other in a way that ends up producing a strikingly beautiful little piece of pop-art. Unfortunately, some of the visual brilliance and color is lost on the graininess of youtube, but you get the idea.
