KOL B-Side: "Frontier City"

Mixed reactions for the new Kings of Leon album. The more pop/radio-oriented listeners have seemed to welcome the album with open arms. The more rock/indie-oriented listeners seem to have some misgivings. Not sure if this song will do much to sate the latter group. It's got a little bit of that ol' Kings feel in the verse (probably because the guitar part is directly lifted from the verse of "Taper Jean Girl," just slowed down a bit), but the chorus (complete with falsetto harmonies) follows the more recent Kings trend of making all songs arena-ready.

This sounds like it could've been a mid-list song on the new album (maybe replacing Use Somebody?). I think OBTN tries for the punch and accessibility that Because of the Times hinted at, but ends up being fairly tepid as a result.

Considering the relatively low album sales stateside compared to big sales in Europe, I think KOL are looking for a little love outside of their core indie-hipster art-fuck community (and I mean that in the most endearing way, of course) and the car companies (see the VW and Ford ads that commished their songs from the Youth and Young Manhood album). I think this one will miss the mark, though, because there aren't enough uptempo songs to really find their way onto most soundtracks and/or rotations, and the ones that are uptempo seem to veer the most back into the old KOL formula of four-on-the-floor beats and ripsaw guitars, but without any of the endearing qualities of songs like Molly's Chambers and Red Morning Light.

This is one of the best songs KOL has ever recorded,it needs to be released asap,it's been shuffeled off to the side and placed on itunes which is the wrong thing to do with such a great tune,we all need to hear it.
