Just a Taste...

...Of my favorite French band's new single. Phoenix is releasing their new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, on May 25th and they decided to let us in on one of the songs from that album. It's called "1901" and it sure won't disappoint. Get the free download HERE. Get it on your IPod, play it at your next party and get to groovin'.

"Creeper"

As Dan, Kelly, and I watched "How's your news?" tonight on MTV (the few readers know who we are, so i figure it's okay to use names), I came across a band called, Islands. Went on their myspace and the first single that came on from the Canadian band was called, "Creeper". Enough said, SCOPE. Here is a performance of the song. Hope this does something for you Alt-Bros, Wil and CK.

Oscar Follow Up

After watching the stars talk about such things as "Hope" and "Change" I figured Brett Dennen (coming to People's March 5th) would be a nice support with his song "Ain't no Reason"...pretty cool video made by a Sociology student.

white stripes on conan.

As some of you know, I am slightly infatuated with Jack White. So when I found out that the White Stripes were going to play Conan's last show, I was more than excited. Here they are playing "We're Going to Be Friends."

Jason Aldean

I am not sure what's going with my favorite artists lately. First Elliott Yamin is releasing some stuff thats lackluster and then Jason Aldean's new single still hasn't grown on me like I hoped it would.

Dear Elliott and Jason: Please release music like you used to. Thank you.

Here's Aldean's new video for his previously released single "She's Country"

New Elliott Yamin Single

So its not the worlds greatest song, but realistically I could listen to Mr. Yamin sing the phonebook.

The Format Break-Up: One Year Anniversary

I stumbled upon the blog of The Format's ex-manager Tom Gates and he provides an incredible read about why such an amazing band broke up. Additionally, he gives incredible insight about what it took to get The Format to Dog Problems.

The story amounted to these two kids bashing their heads against a wall for three years, knowing that they had something worthwhile but unable to find strong support, beyond their booking agent and lawyer (it should be noted here that the band’s new label had some solid supporters but were caught in an industry quagmire, what with eleven year old kids becoming able to get music for free - for eternity - on their six hundred dollar computers). On the surface, especially to the music biz, the album was a complete flop. It didn’t matter that they had been swept under the rug, nor did it matter that “The First Single” was a mega-hit waiting to happen. The data showed that this horse had run its best race and come in second-to-last (always more pitiful than loser)

Best. Music. Video. Ever.

I remember the first music video i ever saw. in fact, I remember it like it was yesterday.  Laugh now, but at the time this was a pretty far out concept. I mean how could you watch music? I said to myself "hmm thats kewl, maybe this is so blind people can enjoy music too, but is this for me?"

oh how young and innocent I was. And soon, I was hooked. It got to the point that I could not understand the sub-text of songs without some sort of conceptual media to accompany it. The videos became as much of the music as the music. As the Music Video progressed, developed, and pubertized, as did I.

However, soon things became complicated. Through out the years, my taste in music videos became so refined and astute, I found the videos less and less satisfying. That was until a blinding vision of hope came to my doorstep in the form of a man named Chris Dane Owens.

Picture this.

An albino Criss Angle with a pencil mustache fucking your girlfriend whilst flying through time and space atop a crystal horse 'n carriage. Only then do you come close to the masculinity that defines Chris Dane Owens.

His music video for the smash single "Shine on me" has restored my faith in the music video as medium for expressing liberty and democracy within the public sphere. srrsly, this music video massages my sensuous spots in everyway. Simply put, it takes every single element of "the perfect music video" and blows it out the back of my fucking skull.

SCOPE Announces GIRL TALK for 10,000 Hours Show

SCOPE Productions is excited to host American remix artist Girl Talk as performer at the six annual 10,000 Hours Show of Eastern Iowa.

The concert is set to take place in the 2nd Floor Ballroom in the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City, Iowa on Monday, April 13, 2009. The show is made possible through the continued partnership between SCOPE and 10K, now in their third year of working successfully together.

Girl Talk is a one man all-out show featuring “mash-up” style remixes, in which he often uses a dozen or more samples from different tracks to create a new song. His latest album, “Feed the Animals” has been featured in Blender Magazine, Time Magazine, Wired Magazine, and has been hailed as one of the top albums of 2008. Under the recording label “Illegal Art”, his work has been called “provocative” and according to the New York Times, “a lawsuit waiting to happen.”

Girl Talk features the artist Greg Gillis, a Pittsburg, Pennsylvania native. He attended college in Ohio as a Biomedical Engineering Major but found his true calling in early 2007. Since then, he has become a world-wide music sensation.

The 10,000 Hours Show (10K) is a year-round effort to engage young people in volunteer service that results in a free concert for which the only way to gain admission is 10 or more volunteer hours with local nonprofit organizations. Incorporating the community and driven by young people, 10K is an influential community building effort and exuberating learning experience. It is produced locally through a partnership between The University of Iowa and The United Way of Johnson County.

To earn a ticket to the show (tickets cannot be purchased), please register and find volunteer oppertunities here.

"I Love College" - Story of My Life?

Can't wait to hear this at the next SCOPE party.

Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore ENGAGED!

What?! It's true! Pitchfork reports that Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore are now engaged. This news comes after many a picture of Moore was seen on Adams' weblog.

Feel That Fire

Sorry to the 3 Country fans that read this blog. I couldn't find his live performance from last night's late night show. Here is the video though. Love this song.

CB in trouble...

That's right; something does not smell right Chris. My boy Chris Brown, the other CB, is in a bit of a pickle. After a scuffle at last night's Clive Davis party, Chris Brown is now in police custody with the bail set at $50,000 for allegedly beating a woman (technically felony battery) in a car. I know that CB would never do anything like this so I am not worried. Though I was extremely sad that he and Rihanna skipped the Grammys tonight, I realize he has to deal with this pesky lady who is obviously fabricating lies that I don't appreciate. Hope you don't have to go to the clank CBshawty! After losing all your Grammy categories too, this is not turning into a good day for you :(

Update: This "lady" is apparently girlfriend Rihanna but I don't know how anyone could hit her. She is also perfect. I need more details.

All Star Guitar performance scheduled for the Grammy's

More exciting Grammy news! Possibly four of my favorite guitar players are joining forces to play a tribute to Bo Diddley at the Grammy's on Sunday. The fearless foursome includes blues legends B. B. King and Buddy Guy, as well as country star Keith Urban, and OF COURSE, John Mayer.

Train Company - get to know them

I have a feeling that this could be a SCOPE fave. Train Company is from Illinois' very own St. Charles and they are GOOD! My faves are "Clementine" and "A New Kind of Home." They are sorta just breaking so I can't find too much online to show you a lot of them, but if you want the album just holla at cha boy. HERE is a link to their MySpace page to get a taste. You can also become a fan of theirs on Facebook to hear all of their songs full length. I think that the saxaphone adds that little something extra to the groups unique, full sound.

Legit Song, But is this Elton John Reincarnated??

I really like Daniel Powter's song "Love you Lately" but the last time I heard it I realized it awkwardly sounds a lot like Elton John. I guess that's not a horrible person to be compared to, but certainly not the coolest.

JM Back to the studio

John Mayer, stripping down and getting back to work (musically). Already decided on a pretty bad ass title, Battle Studies, and set up a new website documenting his progress along the way.

Best Band Name Ever

So I was just cruizin' hype machine, and stumbled upon one of the best band names ever: Roy G And The Biv. How sweet is that? Just in case any of y'all don't get it, ROY G BIV is a mnemonic for the sequence of colors in the visible spectrum. Sooo...yeah, pretty sweet. And maybe I'm just giving it the benefit of the doubt because the band name is sooooo freakin' sweet, but I'm kinda digging the electro-soul-disco-funk of the song. "I can be your nicotine, baby, heaven when your smoking me." Feels kind of like if the Darkness was writing disco tunes.

Brown Bear Endorses: Horse Feathers

Props to Whilden for forcing these guys on me over the past couple radio shows we've done. Horse Feathers specialize in being awesome. The songs come out like some sort of beautiful hybrid of William Fitzsimmons, Iron & Wine, and Ray LaMontagne. Sparse and deliberate guitar and banjo, hushed harmonies, and gorgeous strings, sometimes a well orchestrated swell of them, and sometimes just a single fiddle dancing and playing in the folk tradition. The new album, House With No Home, is great. Grab the lead track below.

You Rock My World, Michael Jackson

While I was in L.A., Ryan Gosling and I decided to go to PinkBerry a couple times, and every time we were there the employees were blasting MJ. It was totally awesome. I grew up on Michael. Those were the first cassettes I owned and probably informed a lot of my current musical tastes. So here is the last new MJ song that really felt like classic Michael (I realize this sentence didn't make any sense). And while it's a little sad to see what he's done to his face with all that surgery, this long version of the video to Michael Jackson's "You Rock My World," over three decades into his career, is proof that Michael Jackson is absolutely and unequivocally the King of Pop. Britney, Usher, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Christina, Madonna...I can't blame y'all for trying.
Ja'mon!

Bob Dylan/Will.I.Am Commercial

This was my favorite Superbowl commercial last night (closely followed by the Doritos one). Take a look.

ELBOW

So I have been obsessively listening to "Grounds for Divorce" by Elbow for the past few days and then it was featured on You Ain't No Picasso today, so I thought I would share. The version I'm going to post is performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra and it sounds pretty epic. The strings mixed in is just amazing.

Check it out HERE.

And also check out the original version. It's also great.

Sing like "Yamin" It

Now that I'm back from LA and wasting time like usual in IC, I have come upon an amazing find. Elliott Yamin, an amazing singer with vocals that hit me in the right places, is scheduled to release his second album (Christmas one aside) on May 5th of this year and it is rumored that "The Bridge is Burning" could be the next single from Yamin. Whatever the new single is will be revealed this month, but until then I will enjoy this song. It is certainly not his best, but i am just excited to have new material from one of my top 5 favorite artists.
